Excel to Markdown Converter

Drop a spreadsheet into your README, wiki, or pull request in seconds: this tool turns an Excel sheet into a GitHub-flavored Markdown table entirely inside your browser. It is free, requires no account, and the workbook is never uploaded.

Excel

XLSX is the default workbook format of Microsoft Excel. It stores typed cells, multiple sheets, and formatting in a compressed container, and is the lingua franca of business reporting and data exchange.

Markdown

Markdown tables render as clean, readable grids on GitHub, in wikis, and in documentation tools. They are plain text, so they diff well in version control and can be edited in any text editor.

How the Excel to Markdown conversion works

The workbook is parsed locally — both .xlsx and .xls — and if it has several sheets you pick one from the selector, with the first sheet used by default. The header row becomes the Markdown header, followed by the required |---|---| separator line.

Every cell is escaped so it cannot break the table: pipe characters become \|, and line breaks inside a cell are converted to <br> tags, which GitHub renders as line breaks within the cell. Empty cells stay empty, keeping the column grid aligned.

Frequently asked questions

What if my cells contain the | character?
Pipes are escaped as \| automatically. Without that escaping a single stray pipe would split the cell in two — with it, your table renders exactly as the spreadsheet reads.
How are multi-line cells handled?
Line breaks inside a cell are converted to <br> tags, the standard trick for multi-line content in GitHub tables, so nothing is silently flattened or lost.
Does cell formatting like colors or merged cells carry over?
No — Markdown tables are plain text. Merged ranges are read as one filled cell followed by empty ones, and colors, fonts, and borders are dropped by design.
Is this suitable for confidential spreadsheets?
Yes. The conversion runs in a Web Worker on your device with no upload and no tracking of file contents, and the tool is free to use without an account.
