Excel to YAML Converter

Turn spreadsheet data into YAML for configs, fixtures, and pipelines without the workbook ever leaving your device — free and fully in-browser. Multi-sheet files get a selector; the first sheet is used by default.

Excel

XLSX is the default workbook format of Microsoft Excel. It stores typed cells, multiple sheets, and formatting in a compressed container, and is the lingua franca of business reporting and data exchange.

YAML

YAML is a human-friendly data format widely used for configuration files in DevOps tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, and CI pipelines. It expresses nested structures through indentation instead of brackets.

How the Excel to YAML conversion works

The workbook is parsed locally (both .xlsx and legacy .xls). The header row supplies the field names and cell types carry through: numbers stay numeric, booleans stay true/false, and dates are normalized to ISO strings.

Each row becomes one mapping in a YAML sequence with two-space indentation. Ambiguous strings such as "yes" or zero-padded codes are quoted automatically so the YAML parses back to the same values.

Frequently asked questions

My workbook has several sheets — which is used?
The first sheet by default; a selector appears in the options panel whenever there is more than one, and the preview refreshes when you switch.
How do Excel dates look in YAML?
As ISO 8601 strings — 2024-06-15 for pure dates, with a time part when the cell has one — rather than Excel's internal serial numbers.
What about formulas and formatting?
Formula cells export their last computed value; colors, fonts, and merged-cell layout do not carry into YAML, which is plain data.
Is the workbook uploaded for conversion?
No. It is read by a spreadsheet engine running in a Web Worker on your device — free, no registration.
