How data conversion works
Drop a CSV (or TSV), JSON, Excel (.xlsx or .xls) or YAML file, or paste CSV, JSON or YAML text directly. The file is parsed in a Web Worker in your browser, a preview of the first 50 rows shows how it was read, and you pick the output: CSV, JSON, Excel, YAML, SQL INSERT statements or a Markdown table.
The options adapt to the formats involved: delimiter auto-detection with a manual override for CSV, a sheet selector for multi-sheet workbooks, a header-row toggle, flattening of nested JSON and YAML into dot-notation columns with a switch to rebuild the nesting, and a table name plus MySQL or ANSI dialect for SQL.
Frequently asked questions
- Which format should I convert my data to?
- JSON for APIs, scripts and web apps; CSV for imports into almost any tool; Excel when people need to sort, filter and chart the data; YAML for configuration files; SQL to load rows into a database; and Markdown for tables in READMEs, wikis and docs.
- How does nested JSON fit into a table?
- Nested objects become dot-notation columns such as user.address.city, and arrays inside a record are kept as JSON text in their cell. When you convert such a table back to JSON or YAML, "Rebuild nested objects" restores the original structure.
- How large can my file be?
- Up to 50 MB, which is hundreds of thousands of rows for a typical export. The data converter handles one file at a time; bigger files would exhaust browser memory, so you get a clear error instead of a frozen tab.
- Is my data sent to a server?
- No. Parsing and conversion happen entirely in your browser, which makes the tool suitable for customer lists, financial exports and other confidential spreadsheets. It is free, needs no account and works offline after the page loads.
