Excel
XLSX is the default workbook format of Microsoft Excel. It stores typed cells, multiple sheets, and formatting in a compressed container, and is the lingua franca of business reporting and data exchange.
CSV
CSV is the simplest and most universal tabular data format: one row per line, with values separated by commas, semicolons, or tabs. Every spreadsheet tool, database, and programming language can read and write it.
How the Excel to CSV conversion works
The workbook is opened locally by a spreadsheet engine running in a Web Worker. If it contains more than one sheet, a selector appears and the first sheet is used by default. Cell values keep their types — numbers stay numeric, dates are normalized to ISO strings like 2024-03-01 — and cells with formulas export their last computed value.
The selected sheet's first row becomes the CSV header (toggleable), and every following row becomes one CSV line. Values are quoted only when they contain the delimiter, quotes, or newlines, and you can switch the output delimiter to semicolon or tab for European spreadsheet tools.
Frequently asked questions
- My workbook has multiple sheets — which one is converted?
- The first sheet by default. A sheet selector appears in the options panel whenever the workbook contains more than one, and the preview updates as soon as you pick another sheet.
- Are old .xls files supported?
- Yes. Both the modern XLSX format and the legacy binary XLS format are read. The output CSV is identical either way.
- What happens to formulas?
- CSV stores values, not formulas, so each formula cell exports the last value Excel saved for it. If a workbook was saved before recalculating, that stored value is what you get.
- Does the spreadsheet get uploaded?
- No. The file is parsed entirely on your device — a strict requirement for financial exports and anything under NDA — and the tool is free with no registration.
