JSON
JSON is the standard data-interchange format of the web. It stores structured, possibly nested records in human-readable text and is the native format of most modern APIs and configuration files.
YAML
YAML is a human-friendly data format widely used for configuration files in DevOps tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, and CI pipelines. It expresses nested structures through indentation instead of brackets.
How the JSON to YAML conversion works
Your JSON — an array of objects or a single object — is parsed locally and flattened to dot-notation keys by default, which suits config formats with flat key lists. Tick "Rebuild nested objects" to restore the original hierarchy and emit conventionally indented YAML instead.
The writer outputs a YAML sequence of mappings with two-space indentation. Strings that YAML would otherwise misread — like "yes", "no", or numbers stored as text — are quoted automatically, so the file parses back to exactly the same values.
Frequently asked questions
- Will my nested JSON structure be preserved?
- By default nesting is flattened to dot-notation keys for table-style output. Enable "Rebuild nested objects" and the YAML mirrors your original hierarchy with indentation.
- Are tricky strings like "yes" and "007" safe?
- The YAML writer quotes any string that would parse as a boolean, number, or null, so values survive a round trip back to JSON unchanged.
- Is the key order kept?
- Keys keep their first-appearance order from your JSON, which keeps diffs small when you regenerate the file later.
- Where does the conversion actually run?
- Entirely in your browser, inside a Web Worker. Nothing is uploaded, which makes it safe for tokens, internal URLs, and other config secrets — and it is free.
