Excel to JSON Converter

Convert spreadsheet data straight into developer-friendly JSON without uploading your workbook anywhere — the whole conversion is free and happens locally. Choose a sheet, confirm the 50-row preview, and save an array of objects keyed by your header row.

Excel

XLSX is the default workbook format of Microsoft Excel. It stores typed cells, multiple sheets, and formatting in a compressed container, and is the lingua franca of business reporting and data exchange.

JSON

JSON is the standard data-interchange format of the web. It stores structured, possibly nested records in human-readable text and is the native format of most modern APIs and configuration files.

How the Excel to JSON conversion works

Your .xlsx or .xls workbook is parsed on your device. With multi-sheet files a sheet selector appears (the first sheet is preselected), the header row supplies the JSON keys, and typed cells carry through: numbers stay numbers, booleans stay booleans, and dates are normalized to ISO strings.

Every data row becomes one object in the output array, with empty cells emitted as null so consuming code can tell "blank" from "zero". The result is pretty-printed JSON that drops straight into scripts, fixtures, and API mocks.

Frequently asked questions

How are multiple sheets handled?
You convert one sheet at a time. A selector listing every sheet appears when the workbook has more than one, and switching sheets re-parses and refreshes the preview immediately.
What do Excel dates look like in JSON?
Dates are converted to ISO 8601 strings — 2024-06-15 for pure dates, with a time suffix when the cell contains one — instead of Excel's raw serial numbers.
My sheet has no header row. What happens?
Untick "First row is headers" and keys are generated as column_1, column_2, … while every row of the sheet is kept as data.
Can I use this with confidential workbooks?
Yes. Nothing is transmitted anywhere — parsing happens in a Web Worker on your machine, and the tool stays free with no account.
